About the condition
Midfoot Osteoarthritis
What is Midfoot Osteoarthritis? Midfoot osteoarthritis is a degenerative joint disease that affects the joints in the middle of the foot. It occurs when the cartilage that cushions the joints wears down over time, leading to pain, stiffness, and swelling.
Symptoms
• Pain in the middle of the foot, especially during weight-bearing activities.
• Stiffness and swelling in the midfoot.
• Difficulty walking or standing for long periods.
• Reduced range of motion in the foot.
Causes
• Aging and wear and tear on the joints.
• Previous injuries to the midfoot, such as fractures or sprains.
• Obesity.
• Genetic predisposition to osteoarthritis.
• Repetitive stress on the midfoot joints.
Diagnosis A podiatrist will diagnose midfoot osteoarthritis based on your medical history and a physical examination of your foot. Imaging tests such as X-rays, MRI, or CT scans may be used to assess the severity of the condition and rule out other causes of foot pain.
Treatment
Management includes the use of orthotics, pain relievers, and lifestyle modifications. Surgical intervention may be necessary in severe cases.
